If you are allergic to superlatives, stop reading now. Pristine, exquisite and utterly remote, pint-size Wilson Island makes most other places on the Great Barrier Reef look ordinary. Although it is just 72km from the mainland, this beautiful coral cay feels a million miles from civilisation. During my wonderful afternoon on the island, I had the pleasure of observing the incredible sight of baby turtles scrambling down the shoreline like tiny wind-up toys on a mission to reach the vast ocean. It was a heartwarming and eye-opening experience to witness the resilience of these young creatures despite the many challenges they face. According to Toby Layton, the island's esteemed former chef, the survival rate for green turtles is alarmingly low, with only one in a thousand making it to adulthood due to the constant threats posed by predators such as sea birds and reef sharks.
Within close proximity to the mesmerizing white-sand beach lies a captivating coral reef teeming with an abundance of marine life. The reef serves as a haven for various species including turtles, manta rays, triggerfish, parrotfish, wrasse, anemones, and even the occasional harmless reef shark. 'The only land animals we saw here were Lizards and seem'd to be pretty plenty which occasioned naming the island Lizard Island', wrote Captain James Cook on 12 August 1770. The bow-legged monitor lizards are still here in abundance, but one part of their habitat has changed beyond recognition.
