This comprehensive Amsterdam itinerary allows you to not only check off the must-see attractions but also provides ample opportunity to wander through the picturesque canals and charming city streets.

During your two-day adventure, make sure to explore popular sites such as the Van Gogh Museum, Rijksmuseum, and Anne Frank House, immersing yourself in the art, history, and stories that these renowned locations have to offer. Delve into the beauty of Amsterdam's canals and parks, where you can spend leisurely afternoons soaking in the relaxed atmosphere and admiring the picturesque scenery. Make time to indulge in the city's trendy restaurant scene, where you can tantalize your taste buds with a wide range of cuisines.

About Our Amsterdam Experiences

We have been to Amsterdam twice, in 2008 and 2018. Our first visit to Amsterdam was perfect. It was late April, the skies were sunny, the tulips were blooming, and strolling along the canals was magical. In fact, this was the first city we ever visited in Europe, so it has a special place in our hearts.

Amsterdam was even better the second time around. This time, it was early April, it was more crowded, a little chillier, and the bulbs were still shut from the unusually long and cold winter, but we loved every minute we spent in Amsterdam. On our second visit, we skipped the museums and spent most of our time wandering the canals, trying new restaurants, and just enjoying Amsterdam.

On this Amsterdam itinerary, I combined the best of our experiences so you can have the perfect two days in Amsterdam.

We hope you fall in love with Amsterdam like we did!

Among the treasures showcased here are remarkable masterpieces created by renowned artists such as Johannes Vermeer, Rembrandt, and Frans Hals. Visitors typically dedicate approximately 2 to 3 hours to explore and appreciate the diverse selection found within the museum's halls.

2:30 pm Vondelpark

Vondelpark is Amsterdam’s green space. This is where the local people relax and sunbath on warm days and where families go outside to play. It’s a pretty spot to visit, especially after spending most of the day inside of art museums.

Vondelpark

Exploring Vondelpark and the Bloemenmarkt in Amsterdam

After enjoying your time in the scenic Vondelpark, you can continue your Amsterdam adventure by either taking a leisurely walk or hopping on Tram 1 to reach the vibrant Bloemenmarkt.

Mid-Afternoon or Early Evening: Optional Canal Cruise

If you want to take a canal cruise of Amsterdam, this afternoon or evening is a great time to do it.

Leidesplein is one of the more popular meeting points to start a canal cruise (although they can also start near Centraal Station, the Anne Frank House, or other locations in Amsterdam). You will walk through Leidesplein as you go from Vondelpark to Bloemenmarkt, the floating market.

I am including the canal cruise at this point in the itinerary since it is a great way to relax after a morning at the museums. However, if you choose to do an evening tour or night cruise, you will have to tweak this itinerary a little bit (if you have questions let me know in the comment section at the end of this post). And of course you can completely skip the canal cruise, opting to exploring the canals and Jordaan on foot, which is also very nice.

There are numerous options: glass-enclosed boats filled with large groups of tourists, smaller open boat tours with smaller groups of people, and private tours. You will pay more for a smaller group or private experience but if you don’t want to be sandwiched in a boat with a bunch of strangers, this could be worth the extra price.

You can take a tour during the day, at sunset, or in the evening. Some smaller group and private tours serve wine and cheese while you cruise the canals. Most canal tours last one hour to an hour and a half.

Reserve your canal cruise before you get to Amsterdam. The small group and private tours sell out in advance. Plus, you then know your start time and meeting place and can adjust this Amsterdam itinerary. Here are a few options of highly rated canal cruises in Amsterdam.

3:30 pm: Discover the Bloemenmarkt

Indulge your senses at the Bloemenmarkt, an extraordinary floating flower market that can only be found in Amsterdam. Here, you'll encounter a collection of around 15 florist shops, brimming with vibrant blooms, bulbs, and delightful souvenirs. While it's true that this market has become a popular destination for tourists, there's still something magical about wandering through the colorful aisles, especially if you're on the lookout for unique gifts to bring back home.

Did you know that the Bloemenmarkt has been in operation since 1862? Its long-standing history and picturesque location, alongside the Singel Canal, make it an ideal spot for both locals and visitors to immerse themselves in Amsterdam's lively floral culture. Take a moment to admire the range of tulips, daffodils, and other seasonal flowers, making sure to capture snapshots of their vibrant hues. Whether you have a green thumb or simply appreciate nature's beauty, the Bloemenmarkt is a delightful pit-stop on your Amsterdam itinerary.

9 am: Breakfast at the Pancake Bakery

For an over-the-top breakfast experience, visit the Pancake Bakery. This popular breakfast spot serves giant pancakes topped with almost anything you can imagine. If you have a sweet tooth, you can get pancakes topped with ice cream, hot sauce, and caramel. Or, if you like something savory, there are lots of options too. If you really want to try something sweet, we loved the Dutch pancake, a pancake topped with stroopwafel chunks, cinnamon ice cream, and whipped cream.

If you have a sweet tooth, indulging in an apple cinnamon pancake is a must during your visit to Amsterdam. However, as they can be overwhelmingly sweet, it's worth considering ordering a savory pancake as well. The Hungarian pancake we tried was delicious, but on our next trip, we're eager to sample the flavors of the French pancake.

10 am: Anne Frank House

Without a doubt, a visit to Amsterdam would not be complete without a visit to the Anne Frank House. And it’s just a short walk from the Pancake Bakery.

For two years and one month, Anne Frank and her family lived in a secret annex, hidden away from the Nazi’s. During this time, she wrote in her diary, which became a memoir and an important piece of history.

Tour the hidden rooms and see the movable bookcase that covered the entrance into the rooms.

For lunch, we loved Piqniq. This small restaurant serves tiny gourmet sandwiches and soups, sort of like tapas for lunch. The food is delicious and the prices are very reasonable. This is a great restaurant to visit if you want quality food in Amsterdam without spending a fortune.

Indulge in a Delicious Lunch at Piqniq

For a memorable dining experience on your two days in Amsterdam itinerary, make sure to visit Piqniq. Located near Central Station and just a short stroll away from De Wallen, Piqniq is the perfect place to grab a bite to eat before continuing your exploration of the city.

After enjoying a delightful meal at Piqniq, head towards Our Lord in the Attic, one of Amsterdam's hidden gems. Take a leisurely 17-minute walk through the bustling streets of Amsterdam to reach this unique historical site. Our Lord in the Attic is a beautifully preserved 17th-century canal house with a hidden Catholic church in the attic, offering a fascinating glimpse into the city's religious history.

3 pm: Museum Ons’Lieve Heer Op Solder

Say what? This museum, also called Our Lord in the Attic, is one of the best history lessons in Amsterdam.

This canal house, built in 1630, looks normal on the outside. But inside, on the top level, sits a secret Catholic Church. Catholicism was banned in Amsterdam during the 17th century, so people built small churches in their houses, hidden away from public view. This church is one of the largest and the best preserved of these schuilkerks.

Prepare to be amazed by the intricacies of this hidden church architecture, that lay preserved over years in a residential house. There are many such hidden gems in Amsterdam that evoke the historical richness of the city.

4:30 pm: Exploring the Heart of Amsterdam

Discover the vibrant energy and unique charm of De Wallen, famously known as Amsterdam's Red Light District. This captivating area offers more than just its infamous reputation, boasting picturesque canals and charming canal houses that line its streets, creating an enchanting atmosphere perfect for leisurely strolling.

As you wander through De Wallen, take a moment to appreciate the historic Oude Kerk, Amsterdam's oldest building dating back to 1306. This architectural masterpiece, located in close proximity to Our Lord in the Attic, holds centuries of stories within its walls. From here, continue your exploration and make your way towards Dam Square, a central hub buzzing with activity and surrounded by iconic landmarks.

Remember to take in the sights and sounds, allowing the vibrant ambiance to create lasting memories of your time in the heart of the city.

5:00 pm Dam Square

Despite being known for its crowds and touristy atmosphere, visiting Dam Square remains an essential part of experiencing Amsterdam. Although it may get quite busy, the square's significance as the main square of the city makes it worthwhile to pay a quick visit. However, it is advisable to be cautious of pickpockets in the area due to the large number of visitors.

As the day progresses, multiple options arise for you. Immerse yourself further into the heart of Amsterdam by renting bicycles and traversing the city's charming streets, or ponder on venturing to Haarlem and indulging in its culinary delights over dinner and beverages.

To add to the excitement, tethered swings let you sway out over the brink of the tower. You can reach this spot by hopping on a ferry from Centraal Station straight to the tower; a mere two-minute sail available throughout the day. Find more details on their official site here.

Haarlem, just a quick 15-minute train ride from Amsterdam, is another enticing option. Whilst time may not permit a full-blown exploration of Haarlem, you can still enjoy its charm. Soak up the atmosphere of the town's central square, treat yourself in a cozy café, and savor a scrumptious dinner.

Should You Purchase the Museumcard or I Amsterdam Card?

Exploring with the Museumcard (Museumkaart)

For a seamless journey through Dutch culture and history, consider the Museumcard. This card is a passport to over 400 museums across the Netherlands, available for free admission. This benefit lasts for an entire year for Dutch residents, while tourists can avail themselves of this offer for 31 days. You can conveniently grab one at several museum outlets.

With a price tag of €64.90, the Museumcard offers substantial savings. For instance, in this two-day Amsterdam itinerary, the combined entrance fees for the four featured museums add up to €75.

If you're thinking about extending your Dutch venture beyond Amsterdam and exploring places like Utrecht or The Hague, or even Rotterdam, the Museumcard grows even more valuable. It grants you access to key museums in these and other Dutch cities, resulting in significant savings to you.

To kick start your Amsterdam cultural journey with the Museumcard, your first stop should be the Rijksmuseum where you can purchase it.

Exploring Amsterdam: Making the Most of Two Days

If you plan on immersing yourself in Amsterdam's rich cultural offerings, the I Amsterdam Card might seem like an attractive option at first glance. However, with a price tag of €85 for 48 hours (€60 for 24 hours) and excluding entry to the Anne Frank House, it may not be the most cost-effective choice for this itinerary.

Instead of investing in the I Amsterdam Card, consider taking advantage of individual museum passes and exploring the city's efficient public transportation system. With well-connected trams, buses, and ferries, you can easily navigate Amsterdam without breaking the bank. Additionally, by booking Anne Frank House tickets separately, you can save some money while experiencing this poignant and significant historical site.

Did you know? Amsterdam is home to over 50 museums, showcasing a diverse range of art, history, and culture.

The Anne Frank House receives over 1 million visitors each year, testament to the enduring impact of Anne's diary and the importance of remembering the past.

Exploring Amsterdam's Transportation Options

Discovering Amsterdam's charm can be best achieved by embarking on an adventurous walk through its enchanting streets. However, if you fancy a break or want to cover more ground, there are efficient alternatives available, such as trams and the metro.

To ensure seamless travel, consider obtaining a GVB ticket, which grants unlimited access to buses, trams, and the metro throughout its validity. For shorter journeys, single tickets are available at €3.40 each, valid for one hour. If you plan on extensively exploring Amsterdam's transportation network, it's well worth investing in a convenient multi-day ticket, negating the need for constant visits to ticket machines. Your ticket's validity commences upon activation, or first use.

  • 24 hours: €18

  • 48 hours: €24

  • 72 hours: €30

These single and multi-day tickets can be effortlessly obtained at GVB service points, metro stations, and tram stops. Upon your arrival to Amsterdam, head to a service point within the city to collect your chip card.

It's worth mentioning that Amsterdam not only offers diverse transportation options but also hosts numerous captivating attractions, including the Anne Frank House and the Van Gogh Museum.

Journey Through Amsterdam | A 48-hour Exploration Guide

We suggest that you procure the 48-hour ticket for this unique tour through Amsterdam. Consider choosing the 72-hour pass or buying additional individual tickets if you'll need public transportation during your arrival or departure from the city.

Navigating Amsterdam on a bicycle is another great option. Numerous central hotels and local stores offer rental services on an hourly or daily basis. Renowned for its services, MacBike is one of the esteemed bicycle rental shops in the city. Go for a short, leisurely ride or use the bicycle as your primary mode of transportation throughout your Amsterdam visit. It's no surprise that Amsterdam is known as the 'Bicycle Capital of the World' with around 800,000 bikes which is more than the city's population.

Another interesting fact is that Amsterdam has over 1,500 bridges making it easier to move from one part of the city to another.

Best Time to Go to Amsterdam

If you want to see the bulbs in bloom, visit Amsterdam in April and early May. The prime blooming season varies year to year, depending on the weather. However, the end of April is a fairly reliable time to visit if you want to see Keukenhof and Amsterdam carpeted in spring blooms.

April through June is one of the busiest times to visit Amsterdam, so expect larger crowds and larger prices during these months.

The summer months can also be quite busy. October is a gorgeous time to visit Amsterdam, with fall colors and cool nights.

During the winter months, the crowds fade away. It’s chilly in Amsterdam but very cold temperatures are rare.
