Surfers under the Golden Gate Bridge

BY DIMITER KENAROV

My feeling is: this must be
an advertisement
for some tourist agency, or
MTV, or a new
water-proof perfume
teenagers will be killing for
in a couple of months, if
the publicity campaign
does not flop in the meantime and
no terrorists resolve
to blow up San Francisco
after seeing a pirated
version of The Rock, starring
Sean Connery and Nicolas Cage,
in some Egyptian joint.

This is an advertisement.
I’m almost certain now, as I
watch the surfers
shiver like flotsam in the dark
icy waters, wreckage
from the sixties waiting for
the perfect wave
at the exact same spot
Kim Novak tried
to drown herself
in Hitchcock’s Vertigo.
