Greg and I Kill the Snakes

BY ELIZABETH DEANNA MORRIS

Greg tries to teach me his real name,
Grzegorz, the Polish all velvet
vibrations in his mouth. In mine,
they turn to mush, oatmeal overcooked
in the microwave. In my head that night,
I dream we caught and braided snakes,
knifed off the heads to let them bleed out.
And neither of us have even an a to ah
or a u to uh. The snakes’ heads in our hands,
we try to blow them from the back,
whistles.
