Our selection of fiction this issue came from a desire to read stories
that started in Act II. We wanted to get beyond the exposition that
builds a story and find ourselves enmeshed in the action immediately.
This does not mean that the fiction lacked a back story; indeed a
surprising number of them have a deep historical context. But whether
that is Montgomery, Alabama or Detroit in the sixties, or the Yemin
Moshe neighborhood outside Jerusalem in the forties, all of the
fiction in this issue has a sense of immediacy propelling the action.
