		<description>The volume is part of the problem. The budget is the other. It&#039;s a dirty secret, but it&#039;s true: most of these magazines don&#039;t make money. They&#039;re funded through grants and donations, not subscriptions.

You have to pay people to read those stories. And there are a lot of them. But most lit mags have tiny budgets--so they can&#039;t hire enough staff to read all the submissions. Even the &quot;heavy hitters&quot; have this problem. 

And then, for those that haven&#039;t gone online, there&#039;s the business of logging all the stories in, and then after they&#039;re read, sending them back...

Give the editors a break. They&#039;re likely doing the best they can.</description>
